5 Simple Steps to Overcoming Stressful Challenges

Certain situations can bring anxiety and stress. This is perfectly normal. Here are some ways to look at the situation, and questions to ask yourself that can help you feel less stressed and more confident:
1. Think about everything you've accomplished over the years, especially similar hurdles you've overcome. Think about how you were able to overcome them.Having a gratitude board with Post-Its of all your accomplishments and everything you're grateful for, is a great place to start. Writing in a gratitude journal daily is another powerful practice that will help boost your confidence and put you in a positive frame of mind.
2. Take small steps in the right direction. A starting point could be brainstorming what you can do and just take one small action. Taking small steps, getting "on a roll" and getting some success under your belt will put you in a "flow" state where you build momentum towards accomplishing what you need to. Afterwards, you'll feel more competent, more capable, and definitely more confident.
3. Don't be afraid to ask for advice or help, or make mistakes. It often helps to take a step back and get a different perspective when we're in the middle of a challenge.
4. Ask yourself questions that will get you closer to a solution like
'What do I need to do to solve this?'
'How can I change the way I feel about this situation so I can tackle it more effectively?'
'What can I do now to feel more confident about this situation?'
Try your best not to dwell on negative questions such as
'Why can't I figure this out?'
'Do I have the ability to overcome this?'
'What if everything goes wrong?'
5. What if we looked at our challenges as stepping stones rather than obstacles? Try to look at challenges as opportunities. You can do this by asking what you can learn from it, and how you can grow from the experience regardless of the outcome. You may want to also consider the worst case scenario (which statistically has a minimal chance of occurring), and question how bad that really is. When I was in the corporate world, I would often ask myself, if I fail miserably, what's the worst that can happen? My answer was almost always I could get fired. The way I looked at it, based on my history with the company and everything I've already accomplished, the chances of that happening would probably be slim. Even if it did happen, that would mean that this position was not meant for me and I would move on to bigger and better things, even though it may not be easy at first. This helped me to ease my stress and move forward boldly believing I had what it took to accomplish anything I set my mind to, and everything happens for a reason and for the greater good even if I can't immediately see it. If things didn't go the way I hoped, I will learn from it and move on. Ultimately the most important key is to focus on the positive and believe in your abilities and a positive outcome.
You DO have what it takes to move forward or you wouldn't be facing this challenge. Stop. Smile. Breathe. It will all work out.
If you need help in this area or you're unclear on the next step in your career, and if you need the confidence and clarity to move forward boldly, I would love to help.
